A Visit from Mr. Swartwood

Our friend, the thriller writer Robert Swartwood, recently swung through town to participate in the author interview event my wife Denise runs once a month at a local cocktail bar. I’ve known Rob for a number of years, and he’s always a breath of fresh air. I have fun with him every time I see him, and learn so much about the world of publishing. This time was no different. He was in town promoting his new thriller, The Killing Room, which is freaking awesome. (Affiliate link alert.) One of those breakneck novels that keeps you guessing, and then blows your mind at big reveals you didn’t see coming.

But back to the learning. When Rob showed up at the book event, he was toting a giant box of swag. Magnets, bookmarks, and tons of author copies.

He proceeded to make the audience an offer they couldn’t refuse. It resulted in a ton of sales for the new book, and lots of readers leaving happy.

How, what, why?

I talk about his clever marketing moves today at SleuthtSayers, the mystery blog, in a post entitled:

Mr. Swartwood’s Marvelous Box of BOGO Swag!

Normally, I share a little excerpt of these articles here, but it’s tough to get a representative snippet of this one, because it’s so hands-on. If you’re a writer, I hope you’ll take the time to check it out. I also share some of the tips Denise and I have used over the years as well, when doing book events.

Shortly after the event, Rob went on to win the ITW Thriller Award for Best E-Book Original for The Killing Room. The second book in the series, The Enemy of the State, followed in short order.
