The Great Halloween Manhunt (and Barf)

For my Halloween-adjacent article on SleuthSayers.org this week, I am sharing a true story drawn from my childhood. It’s a story I’ve never shared before, but it perfectly sums up my state of mind as a kid. And, in keeping with the Halloween theme, it also features a desperate criminal on the loose! What more could you ask for? You can check it out over at SleuthSayers, the internet’s premier blog for mystery writers, in a post entitled:

Monster in My Mind

Here is just a taste of what I’m saying…

I’d been invited to a classmate’s home for a Halloween party. No costumes, just fun, food, frivolity.

My new friend Christopher lived on the other side of town, the nice side. And as my mother drove me to his home in the car, we passed the town’s nature center, which was dominated by a giant pond that was the site of the town’s annual trout-fishing contest. The pond was enveloped by several acres of woods that thinned out at one point and opened upon a baseball diamond.

Traffic slowed as we approached the baseball field.

Police officers spoke to each driver in turn, peeked into the cars, asked a few questions, then waved us on.

The baseball field itself was crawling with cops. State troopers and plainclothes officers in windbreakers. The ones in blue windbreakers marched along the edge of the woods with German shepherds on leashes. Radios squawked, and everyone spoke loudly to be heard over the sound of the helicopter whirling overhead.

I asked my mother what was going on. She had no clue…

And while your mind is fixed upon spooky Halloween things, you might want to check out my spookiest books and novels. I did a post listing them all a few weeks ago. You’ll find them here:

Joe’s Spookiest Hits

It’s a mix of novels, single short stories, and collections that you won’t want to miss, like my Appalachian spookfest, Arm of Darkness…

LAST BUT NOT LEAST…

Now, a word about my wife’s book. Denise has one big book event remaining in the month of October—on Halloween Day, of all things! And she’s got a slew of dates in November and December! Check out her event calendar here to see if you can see her. The summer book tour was a whirlwind, but the fall is pretty intense too. Don’t miss your chance to visit with her and learn about her bestselling book, Obstinate Daughters.

Now a National Bestseller. Click to learn more about the book. (Amazon affiliate link.)

TWO WAYS TO GET DENISE’S BOOK:

About those autographed copies:

Unless Denise is coming to a bookstore near you, the best way to get a signed copy of her new book is to order from Malaprop’s, the indie bookstore in our hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. They are a great small business, and they have been delivering Denise’s books to happy customers for 15 years without a hitch. You can’t go wrong. If you think you would like the book inscribed a certain way to a friend or family member, I recommend phoning the store to make sure they have all those details down correctly.

BELONG TO A BOOK CLUB?

We have a system in place for sending a reader’s guide and swag to any book clubs that write in via Denise’s website. We just need a snail mail address (USA only) and some idea of how many people are in your group. If you want to schedule a book club visit with Denise, we can do that too. Send us your note here.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEW OBSTINATE DAUGHTERS T-SHIRTS?

Yes, we went there! We’re selling cool new “Obstinate” shirts at our new Joe & Denise store. A ton of different designs, and a sprightly array of colors. I’ll talk in greater detail about the store some other time, but suffice to say, you won’t want to miss what we’ve got going on over there. As it turns out, the shirt I’ve been sharing on these blogs all these weeks has turned out to be the most popular one we sell…

Bright red shirt that reads Obstinate AF since 1776, a product on JOEDENISE.COM.
