25 Years After 9/11

Twenty-five years ago this morning, I was standing on the roof of my apartment building in Hoboken, watching as the second of the twin towers fell across the river in Manhattan. Though I’ve recalled the day many times over the years, and even written a short story about those events, I have come to accept how much I don’t recall, how much, in fact, I did not bother to record. That’s fine for civilians, but when you’re a reporter and writer, you’re supposed to take better notes of highly memorable occasions. That’s what I’m talking about today at SleuthSayers, the mystery blog, in an article entitled:

I Remember Everything—and Nothing

And here is part of what I’m saying:

I had grown up watching those towers being built. For what seemed like forever, my family had passed the construction site every time my father drove us to Brooklyn to visit our grandmother. As an adult I’d spent a long winter night at the rooftop restaurant, Windows on the World, during a lavish Christmas party thrown by my then-employers at the children’s publishing house, Scholastic, a firm enriched by franchises such as Harry Potter, Goosebumps, and The Babysitters Club. Hell, I had been in one of those towers as recently as last Friday, taking the escalator down to the PATH station for my ride home after meeting with some editors.

But now, watching that morning, Suzanne and I could not believe that a building could be toppled so quickly. Were they absolutely sure? After all, there was all that smoke…

I hope you’ll go check the article out. I was a powerful exercise for me to recall what I could. I’m usually better at remembering things, but in this case, it’s not great.

If you’re interested in the short story mentioned in the article, it’s available at all the usual suspects…

Now, about my wife’s book…

Now a National Bestseller.

TWO WAYS TO GET DENISE’S BOOK:

The summer part of her tour is done. She’s back home and resting up nicely. There are numerous fall (and winter) dates on the calendar, but for a few weeks she’ll be relaxing.

Unless Denise is coming to a bookstore near you, the best way to get a signed copy of her new book is to order from Malaprop’s, the indie bookstore in our hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. They are a great small business, and they have been delivering Denise’s books to happy customers for something like 15 years without a hitch. So you can’t go wrong. If you think you would like the book inscribed a certain way to a friend or family member, I recommend phoning the store to make sure they have all those details down correctly.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEW OBSTINATE DAUGHTERS T-SHIRTS?

Yes, we went there! We’re selling cool new “Obstinate” shirts at our new Joe & Denise store. A ton of different designs, and a sprightly array of colors. I’ll talk about the store some other time, but suffice to say, you won’t want to miss what we’ve got going on over there. As it turns out, the shirt I’ve been sharing on these blogs all these weeks has turned out to be the most popular one we sell…
